APY-Flags-400Indigenous Programming

Donations to this fund have enabled the presentation of a wide range of special projects celebrating the cultural riches of Indigenous Australians.

Since its inception, WOMADelaide has championed First Nations artists within its programming, providing a platform for artists that have too often been historically overlooked by the mainstream.

Alongside this programming commitment, a number of special projects have also been supported and/or commissioned through philanthropic giving. These projects include Nganampa Music, by singer-songwriter Kev Carmody and APY land artists, The Tjanpi Desert Weavers, and the Three Anangu Stories - a project featuring 180 unique hand-painted "Flags of the APY Lands (pictured)." Recently, philanthropic support has enabled the presentation of Arnhem Land's Djuki Mala and Tyrone Sheather’s sound and visual installation Giidanyba (Sky Beings).

Without festivals such as WOMADelaide, one can only imagine what the Australian music scene would look like, and how many talented First Nations and Indigenous artists would have been left without opportunities to progress their career. It’s something that many of us would choose not to think about, but it makes us appreciate the work that WOMADelaide do even more.
