Jen Cloher + T'HONI
Australia / New Zealand
A Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Kahu songwriter and performer living in Naarm/Melbourne, Jen Cloher’s taut, terse brand of rock is charged with the static tension that comes with being an eternal misfit. They have spoken truth to power with the shrewd eye that only an outsider can possess and admirers have naturally gravitated towards Cloher’s incisive, generous songwriting. They have now found home in community, expressed on their fifth album I Am The River, The River Is Me, inspired by their Maori matrilineal line. Over the course of their career, Cloher has won a J Award and an AIR Award and been nominated for the Australian Music Prize and the ARIA for Best Female Artist, among others.
Cloher and their five-piece band will be joined by T’HONI, a Melbourne-based Māori cultural performance group known for their energy and passion, who will perform Kapa Haka, an expression of Maori culture and identity. T'HONI is the popular acronym name (pronounced ‘tea-honey’) that stands for Te Hononga o Ngā Iwi, which can be translated to ‘the coming together of all people’. It was founded in 2008 by Paora Te Paki, Kodie Heremia, and Maria Parata Rangiawha. Now, T'HONI not only has a school of Māori performing arts but also has performers that entertain and educate at a wide range of events across Melbourne, interstate and even internationally.
