A beautiful fusion of rhythms, effortless harmonies and storytelling weave their way through Bobby Alu’s music. Self-described as a ‘Tropical Ambassador’, influences from his Polynesian ancestry remain at the core of his music, as well as a commitment to a true coastal vibe. From the deep grooves of his debut self-titled album in 2010, Alu has followed the threads of his curiosity, playing morning markets in exchange for vegetables, touring the world for five years as Xavier Rudd’s percussionist, sharing the stage with his Samoan mother, and consistently taking steps forward into dynamic new creative territory. His fourth album Keep it Tropical (2024) debuted at number three on the ARIA Australian Albums Chart and number one on the AIR Independent Label Albums Chart. He has toured extensively across Australia, the USA and Europe, spreading positivity without glossing over the hard stuff.
Workshop:
This workshop will be a joyful presentation of the much-loved traditional Samoan song Siva Maia, an invitation to dance, smile and sing together. While learning the lyrics and accompanying dance with Bobby Alu and his mother Foloi Iulia, participants will be guided on a journey of the language, stories, instruments and spirit of the South Pacific island, and are encouraged to bring their voices, smiles and dance moves to Bobby’s WOMADelaide performance the following day.
