Somewhere between a singer, rapper, spoken word poet, beatmaker, producer and bandleader, MĀ has won over audiences with her distinct blend of abstract downtempo rap, DIY neo-soul and lush ambient music. Born from grief, self-love and an attentive awareness of the natural world, her songs value Māori concepts such as te taiao (the natural world), whakapapa (ancestry), manaakitanga (kindness), as well as humour and emotional honesty. Since releasing her self-produced debut album, Breakfast With Hades in 2021, she has been celebrated by Radio New Zealand, Vice magazine and Rolling Stone, which named her as one of the ‘NZ Ones To Watch’ in 2023. She has toured NZ and internationally, and opened for Ice Cube, Souls of Mischief, Clear Path Ensemble and Homebrew.
Workshop:
A biodiversity ranger with Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira in Wellington, Aotearoa, MĀ’s music grows from the whenua (country) she works to protect, shaped by a Te Ao Māori worldview. Her March 2025 album Blame It on the Weather reflects her lived experience in conservation. In this workshop, MĀ explores and will perform her song 'TrapsJam', opening an Indigenous conversation on possum control, guardianship, and our shared responsibility to care for land and life.
