In this vibrant contemporary dance and music work led by producer and activist Airileke, two of the world’s oldest living cultures meet through music, dance and story. Meganesia is a high-energy live performance experience that bridges Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Indigenous Australia in a powerful meeting of islands, songlines and ancient rhythms. This lineup features Yolŋu soul powerhouse Yirrmal, neo-soul sensation KAIIT, vocalist Deline Briscoe, PNG songstress Mereani Masani, and PNG global hitmaker Justin Wellington. A visually stunning and sonically explosive work, Meganesia celebrates the shared cultural continuum between PNG and Australia of honouring ancestors and the ancient practice of storytelling through dance traditions and songlines.
Workshop:
Led by dancers Buia and Albert David (from Zenadth Kes / the Torres Strait Islands), Sam and Yoshua Roem (from West Papua) and master log drummer Airileke (from PNG), learn how to dance to the intricate rhythms of Garamut (log drum), Kundu and Warup (hourglass shaped drums) and Tifa (goblet drum made of lizard and snake skin)! This dance workshop will demonstrate the deep connections between the landmass of Australia and Papua. You’ll learn dances, rhythms and songlines from a time when the two land masses were one ... Meganesia.
