For this beautifully simple installation, Stan’s Cafe converts human population statistics into a landscape of labelled rice piles where one grain = one person. In this way, abstract numbers become easy to understand and gain a powerful emotional force. Walking between the piles of rice, visitors encounter a work that is politically engaged, witty, shocking and humane. It is educational, poetic and provocative. There is a good chance it will change the way you look at the world. First performed in 2003, it is made afresh for every location it visits, evolving throughout the performance, responding to breaking news and visitor’s suggestions. Stan’s Cafe is one of the UK’s foremost independent theatre companies. Founded in 1991, and based in Birmingham, they have a vast back catalogue of highly inventive productions, performed in a great array of settings.
