One of Australia’s great cult bands, The Necks give audiences a unique concert experience, with every performance completely improvised. They set out investigating a humble musical notion and then, over the course of the performance, conjure textures and aural illusions that defy description. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, they are a band like no other. In recent times they have improvised with a symphony orchestra in a concert hall down a Polish salt mine; performed a double bill with the Art Ensemble of Chicago; received the Richard Gill Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music; opened for Nick Cave; played on albums by Underworld and Swans; and performed in a Finnish church carved out of solid rock.
