Flags by Angus Watt

Flying the flag of WOMAD worldwide for over 30 years, Angus Watt’s festive creations are an icon of the festival in its many iterations globally.
Born in his home studio in the UK and Spain, Watt’s flags made their way down under and have adorned the WOMADelaide site since 1999, adding pops of colour and movement amongst the trees during the festival.
As a young artist from Newcastle, Angus Watt was fascinated with kinetic colour, which led to his experimentation with flags and a commission from WOMAD UK – ultimately creating an iconic and recognisable display adopted by festivals around the world.
In 2009, Angus returned to the WOMADelaide site at Botanic Park/Tainmuntilla to facilitate a flag-making project with a group of Indigenous artists from the APY Lands. These flags have been flown at WOMADelaide every year since 2010, and have also been exhibited at WOMAD festivals in the UK and New Zealand.
