Led by visionary percussionist Hector ‘Coco’ Barez, this genre-bending collective of musicians fills the stage with a larger-than-life presence.
Puerto Rican music has influenced not just Latin beats but also global musical trends for decades. From the salsa explosion of the 70s pulling from Afro Caribbean styles to recent chart-topping tracks exploring reggaeton, El Laberinto del Coco are upholding an innovative, sonic tapestry of Puerto Rican music. The thread that binds these musical stylings together is one of community and joy, an ethos they’ve spread through performances at SXSW, the Summer Concert Series at Millennium Park in Chicago, and in a festive NPR Tiny Desk Concert.
Fourteen band members will take to the WOMADelaide stage, as the first Puerto Rican artists to perform at the festival – led by traditional bomba rhythms, expect a joyous and energetic set full of danceable moments.
