In the world of fado, Marta Pereira da Costa is a rarity – a female instrumentalist, composer and bandleader who has professionally mastered the Portuguese guitar. Historically, this has been the realm of men, but she has broken with tradition. Pereira da Costa takes audiences on a journey through traditional Portuguese music, sometimes incorporating Brazilian chorinho, Cape Verdean morna and other styles from around the world. These different genres are interpreted with sensitivity and delicacy, but her intense and dynamic performances always retain a very Portuguese flavour and identity. Breaking through in 2012 with recognition from the Amalia Rodrigues Foundation, she has collaborated with artists such as Richard Bona and Tara Tiba and toured the world, including performing at the New York Guitar Festival, the Kennedy Center in Washington and SXSW in Austin. In 2023 she released her second album Canções sem Palavras and performed her first Tiny Desk Concert for NPR Music.
