A veteran of the industry, MC Yallah started rapping at age 10 and has been involved in East Africa’s rap scene since 1999. Alternating between languages — Luganda, Luo, Kiswahili and English — her conscious, poetic, experimental style and lyrical dexterity command the stage or the recording studio. “Even if they don’t understand [the lyrics], it’s the impact that I leave on them. Music speaks to the hearts of the people,” she told Pitchfork. Her experience gives her a layered understanding of the global cultural landscape that she communicates in tracks that skate through trap, dancehall, club and industrial styles. MC Yallah has been bringing heat to international dancefloors, including shows at the Venice Biennale, CTM and Unsound. She will perform with French, Berlin-based producer Debmaster, who she has worked with since 2018.
